Ethan had grown up largely without the influence of his parents. They had died when he was nine. After that he never had a permanent residence, and was constantly shuffled between various relatives living in his little vale. The twisting depression in the land covered miles north and south, and he had only journeyed a short stretch of it. He had lived in little log houses, with thatched roofs and, generally, at least a crude wooden floor all his life. But now, Ethan was eighteen. He could do whatever he wanted with his life, and he didn't relish the idea of working himself to an early grave on a small farm plot with only enough potatoes and corn to feed himself and his family. Ethan had already agreed for an apprenticeship with Alder, the region's only blacksmith. Alder was skilled, and even made a few swords for King Barek of Alamansul. Swords were very expensive, primarily because of their rarity. Ethan hoped that he could at least make some good arrow heads and daggers, which might be worth enough to start his future.
"Well, nothing like the future to take you mind off the present," thought Ethan as he dug with his hands in the dirt for some of his aunt Eleanor's potatoes. "In two days, I will get to begin working with a burning hot furnace, and a pile of ore," he mused as he continued to reach for wasn't quite in his grasp. But things were not to begin as he hoped...
