This thread will provide you with everything you need to know about Notch's newly anticipated game set in space.
[/size] Brief Overview0x10c is an upcoming game by the developer of Minecraft, otherwise known as Notch. The game is said to be set far into the future in space after humans created a machine which would let them sleep for hundreds of years during interstellar travel. Something went wrong with the machines and the people were kept in a sleep state for a massive amount of time to the point where the universe has been collapsing in a "big crunch". FeaturesIn this game you will be given your own spaceship that you can upgrade and use to do things such as mining, traveling to other stars, planets, etc. But there's a catch. Each ship is given a (or a maximum of 3) fully-functioning 16-bit DCPU that is capable of controlling all functions of the ship. The DCPU is fully programmable, runs on your computer's own memory, and Notch even has specifications for the DCPU already. Notch also stated that one of the main uses of the DCPU is to pass time while going on a long expedition or while waiting for a mining project to be completed. Another quality of your spaceship is that it is given a fixed wattage to power things. For instance, you might have to turn off all the lights in order to activate a cloaking device. This will undoubtedly have a significant effect on how users play the game. One last thing Notch mentioned was that there is going to be an online multiverse where users can meet, fight, and trade with other users across the stars. Additionally, the multiplayer servers will emulate your ship even when you log-off. There is the possibility of a monthly fee for entering the multiverse, although private and singleplayer modes are said to be without one. Community ResponseThe online community has responded quite positively to Notch's news and previews of 0x10c. YouTube users have made videos with their responses and ideas, and there is even a forum if you want to learn more about it. Many users have already began programming the DCPU, with retro games like Tetris. Screenshots

Exciting. D'ya think we could get a board for 0x10c/trillek/jmp to the speed of light/whatever once he gets a playable release out there?

Even Minecraft doesn't have its own board here, and it's easily the most popular game here.

At least a subboard would be nice. Maybe a general Mojang subboard? Perhaps it's completely unnecessary, considering there is hardly any talk of other games anyway...

The 3rd pic is not an in-game image. It was a smooth lighting effect tested by Notch and proven to eat up all of his CPU for breakfast. Most of these images I've seen before. Looks about 53.% more epic when a couple of them are grouped together though.
As for the game itself, I am looking forward to it's first release (alpha, beta or final)

Iirc, the third screenshot was effectively "in-game," however of an incredibly early version of the engine. So yes, you are right in that you couldn't really do anything in the thing that he had there, but I'm pretty sure it's the same wad of code. Anyway, feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Reading the rest of the Reddit thread, it seems that Notch has a legitimate reason for an otherwise questionable action - he essentially wants this to be more like an MMO game with a singlue multiverse rather than have multiple servers that end up being their own multiverses and effectively "scattering" players...

Not at all, a lot of people would join the paid multiverse server, they do that with say, GodCraft, it's a server you pay to get in, a ton of people still play it. The real reason he doesn't want to make private servers is because that means you don't have to pay to play multiplayer. He wants more money, not that wanting money is a bad thing, it's his game and he is entitled to gain profit from it, but I dislike the idea of no private servers. It'd be a relatively easy thing to implement compared to say, a huge multiverse server. I'm not to keen on paying money on a monthly basis either.

which means that the game will end up just like any other MMO, bad. the concept is great, but notch ruined it.

Yep, I don't want to pay a monthly subscription, I'd rather pay 100 at once for a good game than 10 a month for a good game.
Not to mention, all monthly paid MMOs, or MMOs in general are pretty bad.

Refusing private servers? Never mind, not interested after all. It's a shame to see him ruin such a potentially good concept.

It sounds somewhat interesting, but I think even if it had the regular servers I would not play it. I definitely will not play this now, paying monthly MMO games is not really the type of stuff I like to do.

"Wow, no, it's not technical limitations, it's about not wanting to shard the game. It's much more interesting to have a consistent universe. If anyone wants to reverse engineer the protocol and set up their own, we won't stop them (as long as they don't charge for their version of our game), but we won't distribute our multiverse servers." - notch Someone will have an unofficial server released within a week from launch, calm down guys.
