A contest for a Minecraft giftcode. It'll be multi-tiered, take place in Minecraft, etc, and I'm hoping to limit activities to those that require more skill than luck (eg, redstone, building, PvP, but not spleef). It'll be DBF-member-invite only (Anyone on the DBF or who is directly invited by someone on the DBF). The winner gets the code regardless of whether or not they already have MC. What they do with it is up to them.
Oh, and I'm also giving away a copy of portal to the top-ranked person that plays that doesn't already have portal and wants it. So you've got that.
This thread is currently to gather ideas and structure for the contest. Let me know if you're interested in partaking.

I think I wish to participate in any competition that allows for me to do such free things for free wares.

I don't know, the outcome of any close-range PvP'ing in MC can be determined by a second of lag... Bow fights are much better.

I'd like to participate, but will my computer cope...?

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED. My friend is stuck on the pirated version of 1.1, so I'll give it to him if I win. And that graphic should be ready soon. If I just work on it for five hours straight it should be done.

The graphic is no longer necessary, the old contest was cancelled.

Okay. That's better for me because I don't have five hours to work on a graphic.

Maybe you could do some target practices with bows, because like M4 said, the close range combat in that game is very bad, and it is more luck based than anything else, really. I don't know if I'll participate, maybe if there is some need for more people or something.

Yeah, I think I'll cut the PvP parts. I'm thinking maybe challenges, like competitive multiplayer skyblock or somesuch.

That's also a bad idea. Building and redstone are the only challenges in this contest that actually take all skill. Spleef, PvP, and even skyblock comes to chance and lag.

Well, strictly speaking, any activity on Minecraft will be subject to lag or low frame rates...

That shouldn't really affect building and redstone too much. At least not for the host.

You need to have a pretty good amount of dedicated RAM to use a lot of redstone. Building is really the only one that wouldn't take damage from any kind of lag.

I build a lot of redstone often just fine, and I have a crappy rig. Anyone can do redstone regardless of computer power if I can.

Hm. Usually all of my redstone involves 100+ pistons, usually with farming. That's probably it. I should just rephrase what I said.
Redstone involving a lot of pistons, dispensers, or minecarts can cause a bit of lag if you don't have a decent rig.

It'll probably be a compactness thing if anything, not a large-scale project like that.

In which case I have a good idea for what to make.

So, currently good ideas are building and redstone. Anything else? I was gonna do some custom maps like skyblock or that one tower SMP game, but it's true that those rely on luck to an extent.

What? No? Lag doesn't effect redstone for the host, the host doesn't have lag since the server takes place on his rig. Just let him operate the redstone device. He can judge it from there.

Since the server is on his rig, there may be some lag for everybody.

That assumes it'll be on a server.
EDIT: Which, after thinking about it, it will be. Just use smart clocks and you should be fine. Lag control is part of redstone, after all.
I'm still working on the specifics, but I think it will be one large creation instead of stages. The creation will be judged on the basis of both redstone use (creative and preferably hidden) and architecture, you have a 1km squared space and 24 hours to make it. It may have to be delayed if progress on GSW is not proceeding as planned.
Will the day after tomorrow work for everyone?
EDIT2: I see some people already have word done in their own worlds. Send me the schematic before the contest "begins" and I'll port it into your slot on the world.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) would work best for me because of graduation. Obviously there is no school during it. Any other day of the week this week, I won't have as much time, but it will still be doable.

wait, you mean that work done before the contest begins can be part of our entry!?

Actually, I'm tweaking the contest. Just PM me a map sometime before Sunday PST and I'll judge them when possible.

Mostly useful. You know my obsession with redstone. Make something to impress me, the judging can be by vote or whatever.
Also, due date today. Get 'em to me by the end of today. I want to be rid of this thing.
