Neither. They both have their pros and cons.

Yes, but you must have a preference. I like iPhone, better display, more apps, facetime, etc.

Android has a more open app market, and I hate any sort of cherry-picking, so I suppose the Android is better.

I have taken a liking to more applications, so therefore I must side with androids... Their advertisements are strange, I also like that about them. Fills the room with sound and effects.

Me? I prefer iphone, but only because I have one. (A crappy slow one at that with this new crippling OS)
If I had a good android, my opinion would be different. If I were to get a phone upgrade at this very point in time, my mind is pointed towards android at the moment, do to some of the phones with android being epic, fast, nice and awesome. (Although I'll probably get a run down old model)
A thing I don't like about android is that some phones with android never get updates, so once you have one version, you are stuck with it.

I've used Android, and I've used iPhone, and I have to say iPhone. Thinner, stronger, great camera, and FaceTime. And I love the apps.

Thinner - Really don't see how it matters.
Stronger - How so? Besides, Android runs on many devices.
Great Camera - There are lots of Android cameras.
Facetime - AKA videochat, AKA what android devices can do far better than iphones
Apps - Android has a larger app market.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages: Iphone- + good hardware
- + fast system (generally more fluid then android)
- + system updates for a long time
- + works very well with macs
- + more apps then on the android market (for now)
- o deep Itunes integration (I hate it, others like it)
- - only approved apps make it to the market, thus
- - slower apps updates
- - more expensive then comparable android devices
- - not suited for casual developers
- - no changeable battery
- - features are sometimes not available for political reasons
- + more hardware choice, from cheap to high end
- + good development system, free to use, cheap to sell on the market
- + you can install apps without the need of the market (for Beta testing purposes or for cheaper apps, markets (apple & android) get 30% of your money)
- + no political restrictions on what you are allowed to do on your device (only security related restrictions)
- + good integration with google services (if you don't want to, don't use them)
- + very good customizable
- + many devices have third party (modded) firmwares with new features and bugfixes
- - most hardware vendors don't care about system updates at all, thats also a security risk (for those who don't use 3rd party firmwares)
- - usually not as fluid as iphone devices
- - often not as long battery life
- - not as many apps as Iphone, especially less games
- - some apps are not compatible with every hardware, even with high end hardware
- - the hardware vendors still try to lock you out of your device, so you (usually) have to "hack" your device to install 3rd party firmwares
I don't own either of them. I bought 3 Android phones for my family, two cheap ones for my parents and a high end one for my brother (galaxy s). I know the Iphone from a friend and what I read about it, so I'd say I know both worlds and am not that biased. The Iphone is a great device. And I think it is very well suited to the majority of people. Most people want their device to just work. They don't care about politics or moddability or development. Iphones get their updates and they have many apps and if youre a bit flexible they integrate well into your existing infrastructure. Androids are a bit the opposite. They are generally a little more sluggish, provide great fun for tech nerds and provide a very good integration into your system when you use google services. If you don't you can find apps to improve your experience, but the market is pretty crowded IMO. Android systems usually don't get system updates, so they theoretically have a security issue. But that hasn't made a real difference yet. If youre not that much into technology both systems are good choices. If you have money to throw away, buy an iphone and you will probably get the better system for you. If want something cheaper, android phones will provide about just as much for less or far less if your willing to sacrifice some stuff. If you like modifying your stuff, then definitely go for android. If you want to code stuff for your phone, definitely go for android (unless you make your living from phone apps). If you go android, the choice of your handset can make a huge difference though. Some vendors try to me more iphone like, with forced crap, others have more from the pure android spirit...

Hmmmm, I'll think about that next time I get a phone.
I've never used an android before and it is looking better and better as time progresses. Iphones can be sluggish. Apple updates all their phones, and some of the older models get VERY slow with the upgrade. (my model) You also can't undo upgrades.
Although I'm only getting a new phone (MAYBE) next year june/july. So things can change until then.

I have quite possibly the worst iPhone ever made. It's slow, it's laggy, the button that turns off the screen doesn't work, etc. I still have to go with iPhone on this one though simply because of the iPod, and the Apple App Store has something over 100,000 apps, and the android has like 20,000? Both are great phones, but I just have to go with iPhone

100,000 apps, 90,000 of them useless fart apps or something of that variety. As opposed to the android market, where you can make your own.

Oh my God, finally something to prove! 3 months ago, the App Store had 350,000+ apps, while the Android Market currently has about 320,000+. But most of these apps are just stupid free apps, like Qwerty said.

Actually... gigaom.com/2010/08/02/android-sales-overtake-iphone-in-the-u-s/When more people buy Androids, there's more of a market for Android apps. When there's more of a market for Android apps, app developers come rushing in. And, unlike the iphone, developers don't have to wait a week or so to see if their app is approved, or indeed her their app approved (heh, APProved) at all. Hence, before long, the Android market will be bigger. I dunno about you guys, but I like preparing for the future.

I, meanwhile, choose not to use any type of smart phone. I only require that my phone have service, be able to save phone numbers in an address book of some kind, be able to call people, and be portable. I simply have no use for any of the extra things that are not inherently based on phones, especially when I have a nice tablet/laptop convertible with a larger screen and the memory I need.
Admittedly, it would be nice to develop software for smart phones, but I would need to learn the languages and their libraries. I know nothing of iOS, and I am knowledgeable with Java...

Personally, I don't like carrying a laptop everywhere I go. The smartphone is good for that sort of thing. Readily portable and easy to use in a quick case of boredom.
...Well, technically I don't have a smartphone, but my iPod touch is close enough.

Who said you had to bring a particular piece of technology anywhere you go?
That's my particular point: I don't need to bring a phone or a laptop or a convertible anywhere I go, but only as necessary (tablet for certain CS classes, phone for expected calls or, admittedly, as a chronograph). I don't need to bring my limited music everywhere I go - especially since I have a good majority of 40 songs memorized anyways. I don't need to call someone or text someone just for the sake of calling/texting. I don't use social networking sites for social networking, but for communication in group projects.
By no means does this mean I condemn any of those technologies (except possibly the reduced face-to-face conversations as a result of the abuse of texting and social networking): I just happen to prefer staying away from them is all. If someone wants a smartphone to make their lives more convenient, then by all means that person may purchase a smartphone. If someone suffers from boredom too easily, then by all means that person should get something to constantly alleviate the boredom...

I don't need to use it, but it sure does help when bored or studying. Either way, this isn't about whether or not to use a smartphone period, it's about Android and the iOS.

Well, The lock button on my phone has been broken for a while, but I just found out today that the internet no longer works on it. It's only been a little less than a year since I bought the thing, and it's just finished. Without the internet, almost nothing works. since AT&T ripped me off with a 2 year contract, all I can do is get a new one (which I am tomorrow) and hope that it works a lot better. Since I payed twice as much for an iPhone 3G as a 3GS is now, I can probably get a 3GS, and while there aren't much extra features, the processor is much, much faster, and that's all I really ask for of Apple. And I totally agree with you Veers. The only things I use my iPhone for is internet, iPod, camera, and phone. The phone works well enough, and the sound card in the iPhone is better than any of the other iPods. More bass, and since every speaker I own has either a subwoofer or a powerful bass driver, it's nice to have that. The treble clarity is also much better. Plus it's nice to have all of that in one device. Even though I got a pretty bad model of the iPhone first time around, I still have to go with it, but it is hanging from a very thin thread...

If that's all you use your iphone for, why get an iphone? Why not get a cheaper phone with fewer features if all you use are the fewer features?

When the 2 year contract with AT&T runs out, my mom and I are switching to Verizon, so I'll probably just get a Droid and buy an iTouch from the Apple store. For some reason, the iPods with more features have the better sound cards, and I'm pretty picky with that kind of stuff for some reason... All I know is me being in favor of iPhones is on a very small thread. I'm just hoping that the one I got was a defective model and the new one will be better.

just get an android and use it for music. the android OS has a lot more things, I think, and its not like you have to buy a developers device to put programs on it. there are a lot of interesting programs on them, you can also run your own code, and pretty much make a game, and test it, because you can run pygame on it. i wouldn't get a new one, if you're going to have to pay for it.
but I think android is probably better, I've used iOS on an iPad, and also Android on a mytouch, or something like that. I don't have either of them, but I think I'd rather get an android toy than an iOS toy

I probably won't have to pay for it since I'm doing the transfer through Apple. If I was doing it through AT&T, I would definitely have to pay. With the multitude of problems I have with my current one, I won't let them make me pay for a new one.
