Dwarf Fortress MegaThread!
What is Dwarf Fortress?
A game where you can do anything with your own fortress. You start with 7 dumbasses abd build up an outpost. Then a fortress. And then whatever you want. You can even make an empire of 1000 dwarves!
Where do I get it?
Google it, download off it's official site.
How do I win?
You don't win, you lose. Losing is fun. Therfore Dwarf Fortress is fun. If you didn't lose it'd be boring.
I need help, and it's ugly!
If you need help I commonly host a tutorial online level of DF. You'll need to find me AND tempy on chat at the same time to play.
How do I make my single player to have better graphics (Sprites)
No idea, you can download them and set them in, or download the lazy noob pack.
I want to make my own sprite pack, how do I do it?
Not my problem, I am planning to make one though. You'll have to figure out how to make your own.

We should include something on cheats.
Note: The dwarves will never do what you tell them to do in the order in which you want them to do them.

Addicted... can't... stop... playing...
This is a serious timedrain. I thought "Oh, I'll just throw together a quick base" and now I have a fortress and I compressed an entire afternoon into what felt like a couple hours. Then still didn't want to stop.

This game needs allot more attention than is gets! so I'm leaving these: places to get some people to look into it! (doubt it will work, more for lulz...) P.S spolier'd cause of slightly "NSFW" launguage.

Texture packs. Enough said. True but in my opinion, there's nothing like good old ascii!

Same, but it's an option for those that prefer nicer graphics.

Yes. get water and label it as drinking in the zones. If I were with you in multiplayer i could tell you. I'm sure you could look on the wiki and find out FAST.

Can somebody embark near a river and upload the save to me? I'm really having trouble with all the water freezing in the winter (I never have enough drinks to survive the whole winter)

Can't find a river? There's like one on every embark square. What sucks is that there is usually an Aquifer.
It's a blue wall like thing on your local screen!

That's a pretty good area... Only if you had a volcano and some mountains...

Expliot: Deconstruct the trade depot while the merchants are in it. They'll leave and their goods will be all over the floor.

Yes, but that is cheap and unfair to the merchants.

Just do it for a couple of times when you begin the game for resources and then stop. Edit: Ugh,a siege appeared so I quickly forbid the doors and everything, but a craftsdwarf and a farmer were outside, they died. So their friends threw tantrums and killed some other dwarves so their friends and family threw more tantrums killing even more dwarves then 3 dwarves went beserek and killed 13 dwarves...and it went on, lowering my population from 148 to 71 and decreasing. That was fun.

You should have used the "all dwarves inside" command.
Nice tantrum spiral, though.

Yes, but that is cheap and unfair to the merchants. Hence the tip being after the "Exploit:" I do believe... anyway I made a fortress just so I could explore it in adventure mode, LOTS OF "FUN"

I feel like I need some project to spice up my fortress. Any ideas?

Instead of trying to spice it up you could learn how to sustain a fortress well without cheats. Like farming, adamantine mining, and atom crushers.
Oh lawdy, atom smashers in DF ;A;

Actually, I'm not using cheats. I dunno why you assume I am. I have a farm (obviously), not far enough for adamantine, and I'm not using atom smashers.
