I was just wondering, is it a good idea to buy a graphing calculator? I was thinking of getting one, and I know they are around $100. If I should get one, which type should I get?

That depends. For what do you need a graphing calculator? If it's for a math class, what level of math is it? Is it something you need now, or is it for a future event?

If it's Algebra II or lower, you wont need it.

I'm in challenge 8th grade math, even though I'm a 7th grader

Geometry? The graphing in that class can all be done pretty easily with tables.
If it is geometry...
I remember a lot of focus being more on finding angle measures and lengths, though. I actually don't remember too much graphing in that class anymore...

My Magnet Algebra II/Trigonometry class required a simple graphing calculator, as did Magnet Pre-Calculus (for which a TI-83 or equivalent was sufficient), but my AP Calculus BC and Magnet Multivariable Calculus classes required a more advanced calculator (TI-84 Silver or TI-89 or an equivalent, but nothing higher). I don't really remember needing a graphing calculator for Magnet Differential Equations, though...

I started on a TI-84 silver, it got stolen, but I've grown attached to my two TI-83s (one was given to me by a teacher I used to have). I'd still like a TI-89, though, because seriously, that is awesome. My programs (Reinmann sums, wrong answer program, games, etc) are all made on a TI-83, and it has served me just fine throughout what I have so far of AP Calculus AB. I'm making programs for the teacher at this point. Ultimately, the timing of the purchase doesn't matter all that much, as explained in the link. If you get it now, you'll have more time to get used to it, program on it, stick a heart on it and call it your Weighty Companion Calculator, and then make programs for teachers later. Just... keep the thingy that connects to the computer. It'll save you a lot of heartbreak later, as some teachers clear calculators before they do tests.

What is all of this stuff with magnet math?

some teachers clear calculators before they do tests. That, my friend, is what the archive function is for. I realize this thread is far past being dead, but I got bored and looked at some old threads =P

Archive function? If by that you mean saving the calculator's contents to an actual computer, Temporarily9 already mentioned that. If by archiving you mean somehow protecting the contents of the calculator while still keeping it on the calculator, are you sure that would work? From my experience, when teachers ask that you clear the calculator, they don't just mean the RAM, but everything that wasn't already available upon purchase of the calculator. If it was custom content, then for the sake of fairness teachers ask that you remove it.
By putting the contents onto your actual computer, you can guarantee that your Weighty Companion Calculator will never truly be euthanized unless the contents are deleted from the computer, too, much like GLaDOS purports to do with the electronic backup of Chell's mind...

Oh, you're right: the last "reasonable" post was more than half a year old. I can't believe I didn't punish for the pointless revival. I guess I will lock this thread, then...

Archive function? Come on, I'm smarter than that and so are they. When I said they clear the calculator, I meant they clear the calculator. Archive n'all.
