Problems of the environment are discussed here. Pardon me because there is already a global warming thread, but this is more general, as global warming isn't too complex. I myself researched it in 5th grade and came up with a chapter-format 7-page essay+pictures and captions about climate change. Anyway, the environmental problems also include pollution, health, and sustainment of resources.
My own perspective is simply become more eco-friendly, i.e. solar panels, compostable trash, renewable resources, etc.

Combustion engines, factories, and many, many other things are what's killing this planet. It kind of bothers me that the technology to replace combustion engines exists, but costs so much money. I mean, if these people really were devoting their lives to clean the planet, wouldn't they make this stuff cheaper?

It doesn't cost too much money. Exxon already made clean ethanol that algae produce, and they have a mass storage of it, but they won't release it until every single drop of oil on the planet is gone. Also, Ford came out with a line of very functional electric cars around the year 2000, and they were on the market for 3 days, long enough for around 100 people to buy them, before the government confiscated them and destroyed them. The people that bought the cars somehow managed to get them back, but the thousands of unsold ones got destroyed simply because of the greed and selfishness of a few people. The fricking gonvernment is snivelling about the economy too much. They're taxing us mercilessly when they're the ones who got us into the debt in the first place. Then they don't care a bit about a single thing we do to the environment. Some species have gone straight from being healthy to near-extinction without a single intervention from the government until the last second. It makes me mad.  |

It makes me mad. *cough* Fillet o' Fish*cough* The people running this country are more are less idiots, such as killing the leader of the world's largest terrorist organization without thinking of the consequences, but large corporations are truly also to blame. Most of our waste comes from their laziness and lack of recycling, so our landfills fill up, and our planet steps closer to its grave, or at least a future of disease, pollution and garbage. |

Humans... You know, sometimes I think that humans are viruses. And then I ask, what we are. Apparently, we are the result of evolution. Somehow, in some way, we were given massive intelligence over the ages, and have misused it, and are currently "killing" the earth. If we have these kinds of capabilities, we so very much have the ability to clean our waste. Why don't we? We do, but not all of us. That's somehow why we now have recycling, by joining together. Humans will be the end of many things, due to greed... The environment isn't going to be an exception.

Sooo, how about instead of shifting the blame we consider how to solve the problem? Small-scale efforts (recycle on a personal level) won't do anything important, so there must be some way for large-sale reform.

Yes, the corporate fat cats need to get their lazy asses off the couch that is our planet before their weight destroys it. I mean, if we wanted, we being the government/large businesses, we could've had people driving cars that run purely on hydro/air/electric power and a law making it illegal to not recycle. But no, human greed will end up killing off the race.

Yes, but unfortunately it probably won't be easy to track. Perhaps one could install dectors for recyclable materials inside garbage trucks? But it may be expensive. Perhaps it'll work with rising technology.
I actually think it'd be better to support publis transportation.
Let's take a look at Hong Kong. It's a sprawling metropolis that spews out pollution, correct? I wouldn't say so myself. It's actually working out pretty well for such a high population density. For example, look at the transportation systems. Metro buses, MTR lines, and walkways and carpoolers show up all over the place while single drivers are rare. I'd say it's actually a pretty green city in this respect.
They do this out of necessity because of thick population density. I think if we follow their footsteps it'll be greener in just another aspect of the world.
