I found a really cool gas, silane. SiH 4Spontaneously combusts in air, toxic when inhaled Highly reactive with oxygen, forms silicon dioxide and water SiH 4 + 2O 2 --> SiO 2 + 2H 2O Reacts with carbon dioxide as well, forming silicon dioxide and carbon SiH 4 + CO 2 --> SiO 2 + C Does not react with water (Wikipedia says it does, but I have found other, more credible, sources refuting this) AND I WANT TO MAKE IT!!! Here's the plan... Produce magnesium silicide (Mg 2Si) by heating sand with magnesium powder Mix the magnesium silicide with hydrochloric acid in a sealed chamber Retrieve the silane gas produced ??? Profit Hydrochloric acid is commonly available under the name muriatic acid. Knowing my dad, there's a big jug of it somewhere. If not, I do have a small budget for this project. Sand is pretty easy to get, I'm not worried about getting sand Magnesium powder is really the most difficult material to get... be damn careful with the hydrochloric acid. It can literally eat the skin from your bones if you spill any on you.
