Skirmishers originated from the same homeworld as the Jackals on Eayn. As a matter of fact Skrimishers and Jackals are of the same species of Kig-Yar, just the two have a number of different physical characteristics. Some of their visual nuances are that Skirmishers have feathers rather than the more spiky quills of the jackals. Also Skirmisher have slits in their pupils much like snakes or the Sangheili. Skrimishers are very agile. They are known to output tremendous bursts of speed, and leap astonishing hights with no apparent effort. In the Covenant the Skirmishers play the role of shock troops and see a great deal of close quarter engagements. Considering their speed, Skirmishers are able to quickly flank the enemy and colapse its formation from within while a larger Covenant force attacks from the front. During the battle of Reach Skirmishers suffered a very high casualty rate almost wiping them out.
Grunts are the most common Covenant infantry. Mostly used as cannon fodder, the Unggoy have lowest morale and smallest mass of all Covenant species. However, when given right weaponry, training and leadership they are a significant threat. Even tough they are sent in large numbers to the front, other Covenant species like Brutes have a larger population but are less used on the front. Grunts tend to flee when facing Spartans or great numbers of Marines. Grunts aren't very smart and have limited options on the battlefield, these include:
Driving a Ghost.
Shooting.
Fleeing.
Sometimes grunts tend to "suicide bomb": They activate 2 Plasma Grenades and run at the enemy trying to blow him up.
Jackals aren't much different from Grunts. They flee, they're weak but have excellent vision and hearing, making them appropiate to fulfill sniper roles. Non-sniper Jackals carry a energy shield with them protecting them from enemy fire. A squad of Needler-carrying Jackals with energy shields can be devastating. Jackals charge their Plasma Pistols more often than Grunts and are better at dodging enemy vehicles then Grunts.
Drones are originnally insectoid in origin but have shown to be excellent combatant units. It is belived that their high morale and fierceness is biochemical. Since Drones come from a planet with very high gravity, on planets like Earth or Reach they can use their wings to fly. Since they have an exoskeleton when killed they tend to break in pieces causing a large mess. Mostly armed with Needlers or Plasma Pistols, they are the fear of every UNSC Marine. Luckily for them, Drones aren't used that much on the front. Drones sometimes board Human Vehicles, slapping the occupants.
Brutes are the most aggresive units of the Covenant and tend to berserk. Since they show no mercy, Covenant leaders love to deploy them in cities to tourture human citizens. Brutes are deployed in packs and are mostly leaded by a Brute Chieftain. Brutes sometimes lead squads of Skirmishers, Grunts and Jackals.
After The Great Schism they sustituted the role of the Elites as leading units and developed a shield system, their own Weapons and Vehicles.
That's it for now. I will add more later.
