Dvorak: "From my memory*, we have some metal clamps in there that we may be able to somehow adapt to fit."
*Memory being the Nonja megafile:
(typing): "Specify units for Life Support failure. Plan path to fusion reactors with minimal radiation and minimal risk of life support failure."

The clamps might be useful for installing at the current floor and then descending to lower floors and returning to the clamped floor, but I don't think clamps will be very useful for climbing up to higher floors unless they are somehow clamped to higher floors. Clamps for getting to higher floors is a Catch 22 situation, really.
Maybe we can make a hook. Is there any scrap metal down here that could be fashioned into a hook or a grapple hook?

Dvorak: "Scrap metal? Sure. Big pile of... knives... and... other weapons that we might be able to bend or something."

Actually, do we have any pickaxes? If so, we just might be able to use those to climb up, digging them into the elevator shaft and climbing as if we were on the side of a glacier...

*A crash is heard by the others down the east hallway*
"John: Hey, guys! I tripped and pulled a cable down, which broke the ceiling, and spilled debris all over me. After digging myself out, I can see a bit into the upper level and, with time and effort, I believe we could dig out a path through it. Unfortunately, it's pitch black up there; We'll need some flashlights or something. Also, I believe the debris has broken my left leg."

Dvorak: "Lovely. The medical bay is above us yet. Also, the pickaxes are in the torture chamber. Fourth floor. Two lower than the medical bay, probably near the hazmat suits. We were using them for our prisoners to expand the torture chamber. We were when we had prisoners, anyway. On the bright side, we seem to be able to get into the torture chamber. Possibly. The space between that floor and this one to take into account the pits would mean that John probably breached one. Not an active one, as he seems to still be alive..."

I'm sorry, Dvorak: I had difficulty understanding what you meant. Are you saying that we should be able to go through the hole in the ceiling to reach the fifth and fourth floors, or that the torture chamber, in essence, fell down to us?

I'm saying that that hole will get us up to the fifth floor, where we can get our hazmat suits and pickaxes, but that it probably only goes up to an inactive pit. Judging by the smell, I'm guessing the one we used as a latrine. This won't be pretty, but you know what Temporarily9 says about desperate times.

Dvorak: This isn't good at all. The air recycler and the heating system, both down. The heating system shouldn't bother us for awhile, since we're pretty well-insulated underground here, but I'm a bit worried about what those open pits of lava will do to the temperature in here with no air recycler and no cooler. Here, help me stack rubble to get out of this pit, once we get John's leg.

Ah, there we go. I think we've finished piling up this...er...

Eh, you could always write up a new character.
Dvorak: To be fair, it's not like there could be MORE of a mess at this point. Here, I think we're done. Now we just have to climb out of here and hopefully find the nearest shower as soon as that fusion reactor is back up.

Is there anything on the fifth floor we need to get, or do we need to go directly to the fourth floor?
|
|
|
Post by Qwerty on May 2, 2011 14:19:15 GMT
There's everything on the fifth floor. Some medical supplies for John, some pickaxes, the hazmat suits we need for the fusion reactor. Everything. We can use the clamps and chains to make sure we can go back down easily.

Alright. I'll climb up and carefully toss down the things we need.
*MO 22759 climbs up the pile of dirty rubble and reaches for the top of the ground of the fifth floor. He hoists himself up, stands up, and looks around. The floor seems relatively sturdy. He finds the hazmat suits and promptly throws them down the hole to the sixth floor where everyone else is. He starts looking for the other things, too.*

H: Where were you? How did you get up here so fast? Anyways, as I've said, I had an... experience... with grey goo, and I know for a fact that they HATE heat. I think. At least, the grey goo I met didn't like heat.
Although I doubt they would be able to function in the cold either. The grey goo I met before was metallic, as well. Perhaps we could shock it?
|

|
Post by Qwerty on May 5, 2011 13:33:48 GMT
Dvorak: It pretty obviously can function in the cold. It ate away our upper floor in sub-zero temperatures. Either way, we can't take the risk. Not all grey goos are the same and even if we could somehow tunnel out through the second floor we'd just be met with a painful death on the other side. Probably.
(OOC: Funfact, the nanobots were actually disabled with the EMP blast of the nuke that started this off, but as we have no way of knowing that at present it's a risk we can't take. They reactivate at the next solar maximum, a couple months later.)
*Dvorak also climbs up, heading for the opposite side of the torture chamber.*
Dvorak: Er, problem. We used to have the series of spike pits here, and now the mechanism to bridge the gap at the top is jammed.
(OOC: This base, as it is still undergoing expansion (or was, anyway), is made so Nonja Fighters can be set relatively free and observed so they can work in the mine. The gap with the spikes at the bottom is there so none can make a run for it and go to the elevator. We're on the "inside" portion of it, but the pickaxes are on the other side. Medical supplies are another floor up, which we'll have to get to with the pickaxes, then the chains and clamps.)

* MO 22759 heads off to the supply closet. With one right outside the Inner Sanctum, he's within earshot of the others and vice versa. Amongst standard janitor supplies, he does find several heavy-duty chains of various lengths. The longest one would only be able to reach upwards one floor. There aren't any hazmat suits down here, so he would still have to go up two floors. He does find a pair of gloves, which he immediately puts on. He hopes he won't be the one to go up the floors, but if so, he now has gloves to prevent his hands from burning again.
He speaks to the group a few feet away.* He already found chains while on floor 6. I'm also not sure I understand what layout you are describing, as it concerns the spiked pit.

|
Post by Qwerty on May 5, 2011 14:13:04 GMT
I know that we have the chains and clamps. Basically, the main section of the torture chamber and the section with the pickaxes is separated by a trench in the floor full of spikes. Usually a bridge can be lowered over this, but now the bridge is jammed. We have to get across to get the pickaxes.
