One and one-half years...it's quite amazing, considering all of the detail based on an existing place. What language was used to create it, or are maps just built with a GUI, hiding all aspects of whatever language might be in play?

What do you mean with "language"? Its a HL2 map, so the majority of "code" is written in HLSL. But probably more work is modelling and texturing all the stuff you see. That is probably done in some professional 3D modelling software like 3Ds Max and composed in the HL2 level editor. The interactive stuff is probably done in Lua, because he uses Gary's mod, but the only interactive elements seem to be "push a button => change the lightning" and perhaps animating some stuff. For more information, just visit wikipedia*edit* I reread your post and it seems you don't know about game engines. So, a lot of code can be hidden from the game developer only interactive elements have to be programmed. But its still a lot of hard work to do something like that. I remember Crytek put up a lot of videos of the development tools for the Cryengine2, so just google for that to see a dead simple engine.

I don't think any Lua had to be wrote, Hammer uses a simple Input and Output system. Example: OnPressed -> Lightswitch -> SetIntensity -> 1000 That's a rough example of how it works.

Yeah, the maps are made with a GUI.
