As Izacque put forth so eloquently, respect is necessary for a member to be trusted and for a staff member to be obeyed. Both as a philosopher and as someone who wants to improve social interactions on the forum, I have several questions concerning respect. - What is respect?
- Is respect merely held by one person, or does there require more than one person for there to be respect?
- Is it something gained or something inherent?
- If it is something gained, how does one gain it?
- Are there varying levels of respect, or is it a binary quality, i.e. either you have it or you don't?
- Why is it that we seem to lack the necessary respect?
- What can we do to earn the respect of others?
That last question is probably the most important question I have. What can we do to earn your respect, and is there anything you can do to help us?

...I can't tell if this is forum discussion, or serious debate.
Obviously respect is that thing after the "Karma:" in our mini-profiles!
Comic Sans is my sarcasm font.

Earning respect isn't an easy thing to do, especially on the internet.
I'd refer to myself as an example. Before I chose to be who I am both on forum and chat currently, one could say I was a generally respected member. I would argue though that it was for the wrong reasons, at least in my view. Of course I was nearly always grammatically correct and followed the rules to the dot, but that got me respect in the sense that I stayed loyal to the forum and my staff members. Truthfully I feel that acting in that manner made me receive more dislike than respect. I also did not go out of my way to annoy or do things members would not like if it was in my power.
A respectable person in my eyes is someone who is relaxed and kind. It is someone who does not wear a facade to impress others and does not try to go out of their way to be a person. It is someone who judges based on what they feel is right and not necessarily what they see as forum policy. They don't try too hard when it comes to enforcing the rules or when it comes to making witty jokes. They are, in essence, who they are. Whether or not you are a respectable person depends on how much you value these qualities.
Looking back, I would say I learned from my time as both a user and staff member here. I learned not to take things so seriously, because again, we are just a tightly woven community of friends who in reality just want to share the stuff that is going on in their daily lives. I've had my ups and downs, more downs currently, but that just happens as you get older.
