Seeing as the 'sport poll' failed, with people wanting to vote for chess, here is a board game poll!

I like Reversi, it's simple, and doesn't get too complicated. It is very fun to just chill down for a few moments.

Well, I've participated in a few chess tournaments, both regional and state. I love this game, I think it stimulates your mind and strategy in a very good way, and I love to think that such an easy game (considering it doesn't have that much rules as some other games) can become a ferocious battle for control. It's essentially war with small pieces of wood.

I like Go, (as stated in the Best Sport poll). Although it is a totally different game to chess, it is actually extremely similar when it comes to the simplicity, and yet complexity of the game. Both games have many aspects, have no element of chance, and are just great games in general. They require 'reading' ahead, having 'global' plans, openings, mid games etc. I once read a game book, and there were three games with 5 stars of difficulty. Chess, Bridge and Go. It said in the book that Chess and Go are unquestionably the two finest strategic board games in history (*note, biased comment) An article comparing the two games stated that some prefer one, some the other, and a fortunate few excel at both. I am one of the ones who prefer go, however, if I was to choose one more game in the list it would have been chess. Priok, I like reversi too, but it is so difficult to read ahead >.< I'm still at a level where it is merely luck so I should try to improve a bit

Nice to see someone else know about Chinese Checkers. Such a pretty layout. I can't vote though, some of those games I never played.

I never managed to, in the few times I've played, grasp the whole thing entirely as in chess. How long have you been playing?

I know most of the games but never play these: Snakes and Ladders - heard of it and wish to learn it. Sound like a fun simple game. Backgammon - I could never understand it. Nine men's morris - Never heard of it. Cluedo - Never heard of it. The Settlers of catan - Never heard of it. mastermind - Might of heard of it once but never played it. Reversi (Othello) - Never heard of it.

Faust, I've played go for about 10 months. (a very short time hahaha) Unfortunately not many people play in New Zealand, so I mainly play online against random people. the problem with go, as you said, is that you literally can't play the game until you reach a certain level. I have a lot of free time (luck me) so I've averaged about 2 games a day for the last 10 months. I think go and chess have rules that are as simple as each other, but it seems to be much harder to apply the rules in go, until you have played a certain amount of times and get a feel for the game.
Zelkova - Nine men's morris and Reversi are other strategy games, with not as much depth as Go and Chess (I think). Cluedo and The Settlers of Catan are themed board games which have colorful boards, dice and a bit of strategy like Monopoly.

Brazil has a strong japanese influence, so I know lots of friends that play go. But I prefer to stick to chess and perfect it rather than learn two things at once and stop them both midway. However, if you're interested, we might play some time. =)

Your comment just then reminded me, but one of the things I like about the two games is that they can't be perfected. As my go has improved, the more I understand how much I suck at the game. If we played a game of chess you could probably beat me with only your king and pawns

Hahaha, perhaps. But we both do know the same thing: that we know nothing. You most certainly have a chance to beat me, as I have to beat you.

Molopoy? WHERE? Oh, wait, Monopoly. You can't really learn Snakes and Ladders anyway, it's basically the simplest board game out there. No strategy, just spinning a spinner over and over again.

I thought it was D&D. Anyway that more of a table top game. Go is so popular that there a manga about it though I think there may be a story to it or something.

I like it because it's very easy to just play a few sessions of it, and it does not require too much stuff to happen really.

I've read the manga It's been written in a similar way to most other sports mangas. The main character learns about go, starts playing, and eventually becomes one of the best in the world. Do you know Slam Dunk? The basketball manga? Although they are completely different, the really basic story line is pretty similar

I am Chinese and I love Chinese checkers, it is so fun, and yay, somebody actually took up one of my ideas for once by making this board. I love all the games on there but it changes right now it is Chinese checkers, but no Chinese chess! Or the ancient egyptians board game of senet, I think it is called. Still yay.

You haven't been here long enough to know why I changed my name, no doubt go back about 100 post or so and the awnser will be revealed and as for me being Chinese, a couple of people on chat know that, well maybe just 1, one of the few Chinese people on this forum. We can always go into that arguing board and debate wether a fake name means that you originate from where that orriginate, and let's face it, I think I will/would win in this argument of me being Chinese if you were to try miserably to prove me wrong. But that if you are still skeptical, or you can just accept for circumstances that happened before you even joined forced me to chose the most random name I could think of, that and I like fernando alonso. Oh and qwerrtyuiop, don't edit this saying it is off topic, just making a point.

I'm not doubting you, I was genuinely curious. I'm sorry if you've taken my question for disdain or offense. Indeed, I wasn't there when you changed you name, so I simply had to ask. Pardon me.

I played chess for a little while and was even president of my high school's Chess Club for one year despite being generally terrible at chess...at least when timed. I also learned a few chess variants, such as Absorption Chess (where a piece gains the moving abilities of whatever it captures in addition to its own movements). It is a nice game, but I find it difficult to look ahead, let alone in under five minutes.
I find Monopoly to be a fun game, especially with all the bartering and merging that I have as part of the house rules.
Scrabble is a game that I like to play, especially with a vocabulary that many have told me is quite advanced, but I rarely can find anyone who wants to play it. I don't always win since I don't always make the best of what tiles I am given, but I wouldn't say I'm terrible at it.
Some time in April I had the fortune of playing Settlers of Catan with my university's I-forget-what-they-called-themselves Club. Even better, I had the fortune of monopolizing all the wheat and kept getting rolls that made my wheat fields produce. It was a shame I wasn't near any advantageous trading posts and that I wasn't sure how much wheat would constitute a good trade for the resources I didn't get, so I eventually lost to the players who were more experienced with the game. It was still very fun, and I would definitely play Settlers of Catan again.
Battleship is okay, but many of the guesses are uneducated until you finally hit, in which case you have to determine the length and direction of the hit ship. It gets boring too quickly.
I find Mastermind to be interesting, but then I haven't played it very often.
For the remaining games, either I have not heard of them or it has been too long since I last remembered playing them...

Sorry, got abut carries away there trying to laugh, pity you can't make writing sarcasm. Rather hard to do, anyway, I don't mind, sounded better in my head as it was sarcastic in my head, sorry.

Oh, I see. Indeed, written sarcasm always causes some confusion. It's Poe's Law in action...
Veers, is this Absorption Chess viariant official? I know fairy chess exists, but I never heard about this one. And It's such a shame that here in Brazil schools never have chess clubs and other clubs of the same kind. It's a rather overlooked sport in here.

I like the chess where you don't know your opponents moves, and there is a referee. Ah, found it: Kriegspiel. After a certain number of moves, when you take pieces, or get taken, you can slowly work out where your opponents pieces are. Well, in my case, it is 100% chance Unfortunately there is only 1 chess set at my school so I can't play it there

Dude, that was a bit cold... It was a post talking about a board game I liked, and the poll title is 'what is your favorite board game?' It wasn't even that off-topic. Read 'Biological immortality' in Serious Debates because that went way off topic.
