What if you could download a template, print it out, assemble it into a bracelet, and use it to add, subtract, multiply, divide, find the result of trigonometric functions, find the inverses of those functions, find logarithms of numbers, take numbers to arbitrary powers, and more, simply by using this simple, aesthetic, paper bracelet? "What if?" no more. I have designed a wearable novelty calculator which can perform all of these operations. The precision and accuracy aren't great, but this cylindrical slide rule bracelet does make an excellent conversation piece and nerd status symbol. I haven't created instructions for use yet, but the template and assembly instructions are already online. Soon I will have a full set of instructions out, possibly with graphics. sites.google.com/site/slidesrulez/home/bracelet_2_1

It's a... printable slide rule bracelet? Well, looks like I'm testing out my new printer now...
EDIT: Aaaand done. Now I just have to wait to learn how to use it.

Were the assembly instructions clear enough? I will probably be posting instructions for at least addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division tonight. No promises, but it's likely.

Yeah, assembly was clear enough. Enough for me to make it anyway. Though in my case it'll have to be more of an arm band.

I've got small arms too. I made it just big enough to slip over my hands. It's more of a bangle than a bracelet really.
The instructions are complete but not yet proof-read. You can download the updated PDF.
Edit: I have no idea what I did, but now my post is doubled.

Instructions made sense to me, I can now use it effectively. Mind if I modify and distribute (keeping the copyright of course)?

Decided not to wait. I present to you, MF's slide rule: V2! Now with printable slides, numbers, and (in the graphic editing file anyway) more customizability! I've started a cult of slide rule bracelets (Lego's joined in and he's spreading it there), and I'd like suggestions for colors and designs. I'm already making an MLP one for my friend Longcat, and a friendship model for Nullikins.

Tell your friends that I didn't know anybody particularly liked the bracelet but me. I will be producing higher resolution versions with numbers soon. Tell them to send feature requests if they have any to micro.farad2@gmail.com.
Source code may also be available some time.

...But I already have a high res version with numbers. As high res as it can be without being way too large to fit on a wrist.

So it's basically my version, but only prints one per page.

Also, your transparency BG isn't very good. I make custom BGs on request on my version, and it's more complicated than just pasting something in. Parts have to be cut, moved, trimmed, especially for the custom slides.
Also Nullspeaker is rewriting your instructions if you don't mind.

I'm not trying to start a fight or anything. I thought I would take your ideas and put them in the official version. People are free to use and modify my design as they please. The fact remains that anybody can use paint to put multiple prints on a page and the transparency is pretty easy to use if you have something like GIMP. You just drop a picture in behind the slide rule layer. If there's something you don't like about my design then I'll add it to my to do list. On that list already is: modify the program to automatically generate the slide distribute software to generate bracelets with backgrounds chosen by the user reduce the gap between the sliding scale and the sides of the channel investigate the possibility of printing on Tyvek make the paper strip for the slide longer to accommodate for reality (paper isn't infinitely thin). revise the instructions
Edit: Also considering a line of special function bracelets. These would include bracelets such as: The triangulating bracelet: determines the position of a point based on line of sight measurements, good for quick distance estimation and such. Conversion bracelet: deals with common conversion factors Encryption bracelet: would implement a secure public key encryption. I'm not sure how this would work, I haven't studied the feasibility yet.
Edit: If somebody wants to take over the instructions that would be great. My assembly and usage instructions aren't the best. I'll work directly with Null if he contacts me. Maybe somebody else could also take over spiffing up the site and/or taking photographs of bracelets.

oh I have no problem with you improving it. I'm just saying that I'll make a custom BG for anyone interested, which is more complicated than pasting a thing. You have to consider how it'll line up, how to make it look good. Or for people too lazy. But yeah. I'm also getting some other friends in my class interested.

Ideally I would like to take this discussion to my forum if we're going to assemble a team of developers. As a university student, I've been pretty short on time. I just can't do it all. Here's a breakdown of what needs to be done. /*Edit: mr-blue-sky.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=slides&thread=5&page=1 */ I will write all of the software. This may be just creating the template generators or making more complicated customization software as well. Somebody needs to take over prototype testing and photography. They will assemble untested templates and take pictures if it looks ready to be released. A third person should take over the website. They should be good with spiffing up Google sites and also be a good writer. Finally we need somebody to take over writing the instructions. Some of these positions could be merged together, but each job needs to be done. I think it's worth assembling a group like this because I could see these bracelets becoming quite popular. There might eventually be something in it for the participants. We need to keep pushing up the quality of the bracelets and make the website and documentation more professional. I don't have the time (and in the case of photography, tools) to make all of it happen.

It hardly needs serious time, maintinence, etc. I'm certainly not wasting my time making an account on a new forum when this one is just as active and just as usable. We don't need a team of developers for a paper cutout, however neat it is.

I don't have time to do all of this stuff unless I wait until Christmas break. If we put together a team of people it will take each individual hardly any time at all. We can coordinate the efforts which have been, up until now, all over the board. The project will go further faster and it won't take me as much time. I'm at college now, living away from home, so I need to buy food, clean the toilet, take public transport, and other things like that. It takes more time, so I have less time to work on projects like this.
