what is a good party that is mosty melee but has a ranged attack for flying things

I prefer a Priest, Gunner, Whipper, and Boxer team. It's an unusual combination but it has worked out for me once you know where you're supposed to spend SP for maximum efficience.

I prefer the gladiator(pure STR, long sabel), two snipers (one poison) and an AT priest. Works exeptionally well and isn't as boring in early game.

I prefer all snipers, myself, although all magicians can do pretty well.

Note: You interpret this advice at your own risk. There is no best team combination.
Well, for the ranged, you could either have a sniper (quick firing rate, low attack, potentially farthest range) or a priest (non-magical defense support, percentage-based attack support).
For the melee classes, you could either have ultimate versatility by having one of each type of melee ranger, or you could do two of one and one of another, or all three of something. I have never stuck with a melee class, but I might suggest taking one of each of Boxer, Gladiator, and Whipper. The Boxer has a quick attack rate, which is made especially useful with such compo items as Onigiri's Card; the Gladiator has a nice attack rate and the length of its sword for its range; and the Whipper has a moderate range and can increase the amount of bullets without Bullet's Cards.

You want a magician for your range. Give either full STR or full DEX. That way he can crush anything via use of a Big Icicle, or just outrange every single enemy with whatever weapon he wants. I would aadvise a full STR boxer to defend the sniper; any enemy getting close would find himself turned into mush with great speed.
