I keep getting fatal errors in a Java applet. Does anyone know how to stop these from occurring?

Does it indicate what the fatal error is? Does it give any further explanation than the words "Fatal Error"?

Certainly. Here is the Command Prompt readout after it happens: # # A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment: # # EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at pc=0x690e5cbc, pid=392, tid=792 # # JRE version: 6.0_20-b02 # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (16.3-b01 mixed mode windows-x86 ) # Problematic frame: # C [atioglxx.dll+0xe5cbc] # # If you would like to submit a bug report, please visit: # java.sun.com/webapps/bugreport/crash.jsp# The crash happened outside the Java Virtual Machine in native code. # See problematic frame for where to report the bug. #

Thats indeed fatal... What applet are you trying to view? I'd try to update my GFX drivers, as the referenced dll is implying an error there.

Is it the downloadable one on the Minecraft site, or is it the WoM client? Notch did say he was going to "thwart hacking..."

'ACCESS_VIOLATION' Sounds like someone doesn't want it to be easy. Kurai is probably right with that final observation.
