Can you even manually assign css classes to elements without using JS? Also I'm not sure, what you want to achieve with a custom skin. I would do only a few things: 1) Remove the big forum header image, it just takes too much screen estate without providing real value (doable with Proboard skins) 2) Remove about all JS. 3) Adjust a few colors here and there, because the Skin without the JS changes looks a little weired.
To achieve 2) you have to put the H/F into an external js file. Then one creates a new H/F that basically just checks for pb_skinid and if the default skin is loaded, you include that external js file and thus apply the default skin. I don't know where you see the need to do anything with CSS...
Of course, thats just clockworks and my use case. Your mileage may vary.
Sidenote: Putting the HF into an external js file is good on its own, because then its cacheable.

1) No, it's what makes us different and less bland than other forums, although I guess we can make it smaller.
2) Just because you don't care about features doesn't mean nobody else does.
3) It looks weird because it's the proboards default, which, to be frank, sucks. Anyone coming onto a forum with that terrible of a skin would leave instantly. It's our looks that got us to be forum of the week, remember.
However, one and two can be achieved by a simple NoJS firefox extension. No point ruining everyone's fun for the sake of a minority that worries about lag.
That part about moving the H and F into an external JS file is good, though.

As a matter of fact, I have been working on one, although I am still scared of that same thing that happened when GGoodie originally hosted the external JS on his site.

Qwerty can you please do me a favor and read what you are replying to? We are talking about a selectable skin. So you can have the bloat skin as a default and everyone interested in speed can select a non-bloat skin.
Veers, what happened with the external JS?

You mean the ones that GGoodie had? I honestly forgot the details, but his host quit working for some reason or another and he didn't have the external files saved elsewhere. I had to go through my hard drive (yes, I saved the H/F periodically in the event we ever needed to revert) or look up the Proboards Code Index to replace all the codes we had. After a while of such time consuming work, GGoodie helped me change some of the PCI codes from the defaults to customized ones that properly interacted with our site.
You mean the ones I have? I'm still working on it, making sure I have everything ordered properly and then wondering how to ensure that users who don't want to see Dan-Balls or stars can still get them, in the event the user decides to go from speedy to aesthetic.

Yeah thanks, that answers my question about what happened. Of course thats a sad thing but shouldn't happen to that extend with a little care.
And you don't have to take special care about the dan-balls. Even if you'd use a skin without JS, you still earn all the DBs for your posts. You can even use your DBs, the only problem is, you don't see how many DBs you have, but you can easily calculate them yourself if youre interested. The same applies to stars. What are PCI codes?

His host didn't stop working. He took our codes in order to be a jerk. He told me himself.
So you are talking about taking the JS and only loading it if it's on the "Fancy" skin? Okay, I can take that. We can just add a simple code to remove the fancy stuff on the custom titles that happen when you turn the skin off, maybe just stick the Dan-Balls in under there or something similar. People wanting speed don't need custom stars, but may want to see their dan-balls.

Alright, does anyone have any recommendations for a good host that permits me to edit files in real-time (or otherwise prevent me from re-uploading whenever I need to make changes), is free of charge, and has good service?

Edit in real time? You mean an online editor? I'm not sure, but I don't think you will find any of those. But you can probably install an editor on any webspace. Be sure though to tighten the security, because that is a potential security risk. I wonder what the problem with editing offline and ftping the changes is... I'm using awardspace.biz. They are the best host I found. They don't require anything, no activity, advertisements, renewal or whatever and have a nice feature list. Only downside is a 500kb file limit and no hotlinking of images. Both shouldn't really affect you though.

Hmm, Zymic is pretty good. It has ads, but this is just javascript and image hosting, no webpages, so it should work.

Hmm, Zymic seems pretty nice. They have a max file size of 15MB and seem to not forbid hotlinking of images. I registered and am thinking about moving my content. But I have to see how they work in the long term. They state they don't want to be file-dumps (you have to create a website) and I don't have experience if they want any activity or not (my websites have a traffic of a few visitors per month, many hosts cancel your account with that usage). Oh and Zymic doesn't have ads either. Nice find and thanks for reporting qwerty.

You are welcome. I used mine as a sort of file dump back in the forum backup, before you made yours. I've been using Zymic for quite awhile. We'll have to back up the codes, though, occasionally they vanish.

www.zymic.com/free-web-hosting/tos/Section 12, first sentence... If they don't want to be a file dump, and if they require that my site have regular traffic, I'm not sure this would be right. As for AwardSpace, it requires more personal information than I am willing to provide. Thank you for the offers, but I will continue looking for other sites and see if there is a good "file database" that doesn't require excessive activity or personal information such as my full name. ...or, if anyone is trustworthy and willing enough, I could upload the codes here through Proboard's attachment system and let one of you upload to an existing host.

In some country its not illegal to use false personal information for registering with services that have no need to know your personal informations... And I guess there are not many free hosts that want to be file dumps. Still I think if they don't have an automatic activity monitor, they won't care. And if qwerty uses zymic for some time now, it should be ok. Or I could give you a separate ftp account to my awardspace account.

That requires me to provide my name and other "unnecessary" credentials. If anyone else would like to host, please be my guest. The attached file has all of the JS and the CSS on the forum. I think one or two are from the staff lounge backup and are not currently in use. All the others are actively used. Attachments:

Oh dear... the old messy million js files... oh I'd be glad to host them so I can optimize them without asking... well I probably wouldn't do it (and no qwerty, optimizing means optimizing and bugfixing, not removing stuff) On a sidenote, I wonder why you have the slow version of changeName on the page again. I causes 200ms lag for me, the faster version I once provided is 3x faster for me... (those are the reasons, why I'd really like having access to the JS)

Given the amount of arguing I sometimes had to do to push simple but effective changes and the now that the changeName is still the old version, I'm not that interested in optimizing the forum js anymore. Still I again did a bit of testing on my test forum and included the headers there with a simple: header:
footer:
I had to do a little editing with all the files, because they were not suited for use as external js files.

Well, this is odd...it seems the aesthetics have gone wild. The brown background is no longer one, smooth, continuous gradient, but a vertical tileset of gradients. The tables no longer show any borders. The Quick Reply text area is white and black. Maybe that has something to do with the HTML I didn't put in while testing the scripts? For now, I'll put the unhosted scripts back on... REPOST: Let's see if this page can provide the necessary details for testing the skin without providing problems to you or us.Attachments:

The H/F as-is, in two separate text files in a compressed *.zip folder. These are direct copy-pastes from the Global H/F in use right now. Attachments:

Why not just use the "Make a backup" button? It gives us one .txt with the H/F for everything, including main and boards.

That requires separating the added names of the boards from the actual scripts, which I'm sure disabled won't want to do, and I believe we really only need external hosting for the global H/F, as everything else is relatively trivial.
