What does art mean to you? Is it anything creative? Is it anything designed to create feeling, or emotion? Can video games be art, and if so, must they be confined to such? What about stranger forms of art, like performances that most people would find revolting? Physical activity? Sports? Where's the line drawn between doodling on a paper and art, or is doodling on a paper the same thing as art?

Art can only be defined by the eyes of the viewer. I would say 'Nuff said, but I'm sure someone will say something so infuriating, I'll have to post again.

There is no debate, it's people's opinion on what art is. Modern art, in my opinion., Is terrible. But Da Vinci's Art pieces are works of art for sure.

However, it's because of those separated opinions that debates like this can occur. Take Pablo Picasso for instance: Many people adore his work and practically think that he was the Da Vinci of his time. However, many other people say his work is utter garbage. Thus, art is in the eye of the beholder, but that does not settle what boundaries, if any, art has.
Many people say that all things are beautiful, and has, at the very least, the inspiration for art. However, all things, obviously, encompasses everything that we know of or could possibly conceive of. Therefore, would that not include things that many cultures say are "evil"? Is what some cultures have called "witchcraft" also a form of art? Or even in today's world - many are against the thought of war and fighting, and carry signs and banners proclaiming peace and love, but also many artists have been known to have a craving for things pertaining to death, destruction, decay, desolation, etc.
So I think there is a question here, which would be something like, "Where might art fall on the spectrum of Good and Evil?" or, like Qwerty mentioned, "When does a creation become art, if it is not so from the beginning, such as doodling on paper versus sketching a 'master-work'?"

Alright, let's say... this forum. Would it be considered art? How about, say, forum games? Individual RP posts in forum games? Are we all artists?

Yup. Anything that required even the tiniest bit of thought can be considered art.

I have heard scary bedtime stories from philosophy majors at my college concerning professors asking that question in Philosophy of Aesthetics to start lecture-sized group discussions. Well, let me take that class a few semesters from now and I'll answer the question then. Until now, I would just like to warn you how difficult this question is for college students, and how the college professors don't seem to have a set answer in mind...

If you view it over and over and wish you could do that.

Art is something that took creativity and imagination to make and isn't based on a practical purpose.

Its not that art can't have a practical purpose, its that art isn't focused on being practical. Its focused on being expressive.

I don't think that this thread has a purpose. Art can only be defined by the eyes of the beholder, so debating this will get us nowhere.

Hmm, I feel like we need a serious discussion subforum just for these types of things, not to start a debate, but just to discuss in a serious manner.
Art is in the eyes of the viewer and creator, it's very personal.

Art is anything designed to appeal to any of the five senses.

Art is anything designed to appeal to any of the five senses. Disagree. Literature in prose doesn't directly appeal to any of the five senses, but it is still considered art.

Hmm interesting, maybe art is anything that is appealing to the mind?
But maybe thats not true either.

Nah, "appealing" is a relative term. Some art is rather unappealing to some.

I say, 'Art' is anything that makes you think. I agree with ShiningSilver. Art appeals to mind.

If it's something you want to experience again, then it's art.
