Before you read this, I'm not a crazy freak who thinks that cars have minds of their own. This is just something interesting that I heard.
Cars are alive. This may sound crazy, but hear me out. The basic requirements for classification of a living organism are as follows:
Regulation of the internal environment to maintain a constant state; for example, electrolyte concentration or sweating to reduce temperature. - Cars do this by releasing exhaust
Being structurally composed of one or more cells, which are the basic units of life. - Each individual car part is a cell
Transformation of energy by converting chemicals and energy into cellular components. - Gasoline provides the energy for a car, and if not gas, electricity
Maintaining growth - Cars grow while moving along the assembly line
The ability to change over a period of time in response to the environment. - Cars can automatically turn on windshield wipers, lights, anti-lock brakes, and other things to adapt to the situation
Response to stimuli - When you push the gas petal down, the car responds by moving (unless in park or in neutral, but you know what I mean)
The ability to produce new individual organisms - Thousands of new cars are made every day, so if that's not reproduction, I don't know what is
Based on DNA and RNA - Blueprints and blueprint copies directly represent DNA and RNA
So, with this information, who is to say that cars are not technically "alive"?

They don't do it independently. Cars don't reproduce each other, nor do they grow by themselves. The energy they consume is entirely devoted to moving, not growing or digesting.
So yeah.

Yeah, they're about as alive as viruses. They have to fit all the characteristics of life to be classified as a living thing.

"reproduction" is just that: reproduction. This is cloning, not reproduction. You don't see cars spouting little car seeds that you plant in a production line to make new cars from.

This thread is silly.

Agreed, cars really don't fit any of the requirements.

My super reply to all of you is as follows...Cars don't reproduce each other, nor do they grow by themselves. The energy they consume is entirely devoted to moving, not growing or digesting. Yes, but they still are reproduced. Yeah, they're about as alive as viruses. They have to fit all the characteristics of life to be classified as a living thing. They do, but only literally. Not technically. You don't see cars spouting little car seeds that you plant in a production line to make new cars from. That would be really awesome, though. It sure is. Agreed, cars really don't fit any of the requirements. Read my reply to Rock. So, yeah. That's what I have to say.

Your mom can be classified as a living organism.

Actually, yes, she can. Cars, however, cannot. They fit none of the requirements, literally or technically (even though those mean essentially the same thing).

You know, my computer.... i came here to post this same thing. if cars are considered living organisms, then any machine/device can.

so yeah, take a 9th grade biology course and then come back.

X 1.Composed of Cells X 2.Grow and Develop X 3. Regulate their Metobolic Processes . 4. Respond to Stimuli X 5.Reproduce X 6.Evolve and Become Adapted To The Environment . 7. Ability to obtain and use energy X 8. Have homeostasis

You can go ahead and take the X off of 8. If cars couldn't control their internal temperature (respond to high temperatures), the engines would overheat.

I'm pretty sure things aren't pieced together as they grow... in fact, I consider construction as the figurative "birth" of a car, not its growth. The growth would be it expanding horizontally or vertically after birth, which cars don't do. And not all of them can automatically activate things.

OK, If anything, cars are NOT alive.
Maintaining growth - Cars grow while moving along the assembly line Cars don't grow by themselves
The ability to produce new individual organisms - Thousands of new cars are made every day, so if that's not reproduction, I don't know what is Reproduction. On their own.
Based on DNA and RNA - Blueprints and blueprint copies directly represent DNA and RNA That's not exactly DNA.
Being structurally composed of one or more cells, which are the basic units of life. - Each individual car part is a cell Nor is this exactly a cell.
Half the stuff you said is incorrect.

His teacher was obviously being figurative. That is correct. As I said, I don't think cars are living organisms that have minds of their own, nor does my teacher. This thread is silly. Can someone lock it? The conversation is pretty much over. :P
