The head-scratcher of every human on the planet: Why do we exist?
|
|

Post by Qwerty on Mar 5, 2011 3:54:01 GMT
Well, we're here because we happened to be fans of Dan-Ball, and at one point we saw an ad to a forum...
Oh. The other question. Why does there have to be a reason at all? Why can't it just be "no reason"?

Well, you don't wake up in the morning for no reason, now do you? It's because you have something to do, somewhere to be, someone to meet. But the only reason why we have those things is because mankind exists. So is it because...oh God infinite loops hurt my brain...

Actually we were supposed to fill up the food chain. Since self-defense systems were sold out nature gave us intelligence. Sadly we misused it...

So, we're supposed to be here to be smart...? Your logic confuses me.

We feed, grow, reproduce, feed, grow, reproduce, that's all really

It would seem so, but is there a purpose to it? Or are we just here?

the purpose is to keep the planet alive, i guess.

We've done more damage than we have healed.

It could've been our purpose, thousands of years ago, but, as Artifact said, we're basically shoving the Earth into its grave.

No purpose. Life has no inherent meaning. No morals. No choice. No reason for existence. We are simply a (highly) complex chain of chemical reactions that reproduce themselves.

Bingo. Life happens to exist and we happen to be here by accident for a balanced food chain which we are totally ruining. Specifically, we are here due to the shortage of trees and abundance of high brush our ancestors lived in, but that's just why we are what we are.

Wait, if there was no reason for mankind to exist, and we only seem to be a detriment, shouldn't we just all commit suicide, leave the crappin' planet alone, and wrap this up nicely?

"The universe only exists because without it, things would be shit boring."

Wait, if there was no reason for mankind to exist, and we only seem to be a detriment, shouldn't we just all commit suicide, leave the crappin' planet alone, and wrap this up nicely? Wouldn't one argue that the reason a human should care for the planet is so that future generations of humans can enjoy it? By committing autogenocide, or whatever you want to call the Sioux myth / Aesop's fable of a nation of rabbits all wanting to commit suicide as a species, we deny future generations of humans enjoyment of the planet, regardless of whether we make things worse or better. That's counter to the human, selfish reason of keeping the planet alive...

However, if it's all pointless in the first place, no reason to enjoy it, is there?

However, if it's all pointless in the first place, no reason to enjoy it, is there? If god didn't make us, then all concepts such as love and hate didn't exist until we made them. That also covers the concepts of "meaning" and "reason". There is no meaning or reason inherently built into the universe unless we're going into physics. The universe doesn't have to have a meaning, because it was us humans who invented the concept. Yes, it's just a concept. It would be silly to lose all hope in things just because concepts we made[/b] didn't always exist. Also, since, yet again, it was us who made all of this stuff up, we're allowed to bend the rules. That's right, we can bend "meaning". For the umpteenth time, we made the concept, we get to make up meanings for ourselves to live by. Edit: Should add in this. The whole "We get to choose our own meanings" thing is en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExistentialismAnd your "It's all pointless then?" thing is en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NihlismNihilists can't get over the fact that the universe didn't come with meaning in place, and they're too lazy to go off and find their own.

It's sort of like asking "What is the point of Minecraft?". I draw a lot of parallels there.

Hey! I find minecraft to be rather eventful.

Just as you find it to be rather eventful, we find our own lives to be rather eventful...

At least the events in our lives don't involve creepers blowing up our front doors. I suppose that's something worth living for.

Yes. I guess. Plus, we don't have those awful cactus people. Though, considering my player's skin is a cactus person (full cactus, no jack o' lantern), I find raw cactus epic.

We can not determine why we are here, or if there is a reason at all. Its a question not worth persueing. Instead we should just enjoy life and make life enjoyable for others, because we can.

How does that have to do with doublespeak/doublethink?

I wasn't talking about that. I was point out he was saying both sides are essentially right.

Maybe both sides are right.

Post by kuraikiba on Mar 25, 2011 22:15:31 GMT
Assuming that two OPPOSING sides are right in every aspect, including contradictory and false ones, is an absurd concept.

Post by Qwerty on Mar 26, 2011 4:07:14 GMT
Hmm, maybe the sides exist on a quantum level and are locked in a sealed box into which we cannot see with a radioactive substance.

Perhaps they are defined via results of a Lorentz Attractor.
